Tips for Fine Tuning your Robot Mower’s Cutting Heights
One of the most talked about benefits of a robot or automated mower is the complete control you have over your mower.
The app and remote control function means that you can set the area that you want mown, the ideal height of the grass, and any obstacles that stand in the way of the mower’s course. What’s more, you can programme the mower to cut at a time that suits you – all without needing to go outside or even get up out of your chair.
All of this means that much of the mower runs on its own without manual intervention. A clear benefit… until you want to change something and aren’t quite sure how to do so.
In this blog, we’re sharing some user tips on how to finetune your mower to identify and establish the right cutting height.
What is the cutting height of a robot mower?
To start with the easiest question, the cutting height of your robot mower is the height that you set it to mow the grass to.
While a manual lawn mower requires you to run backwards and forwards over each section of grass, and visually track whether you think the cut is relatively even across the area or garden, robot mowers are much more precise and are designed to mow and cut grass to a certain height.
How do you adjust the cutting height of the mower?
We’ve already talked about the remote control function of a robot mower in terms of where it cuts when it cuts, and how often it sweeps over a patch of grass during the mowing season. However, adjusting the cutting height is a slightly more manual task.
Most robot mowers have a small dial, or a digital display, which allows the cutting height to be adjusted, set, and then left to work its magic on your lawn.
The mower that you choose will determine the range of available grass-cutting heights you can access – with the lowest heights suitable for pitches and playing fields while longer sward is great for wilding areas and gardens.
Some top tips on determining which cutting height your grass needs
As mentioned in the previous section, the different grass heights are suitable for different spaces and uses of your lawn or expanse of grass.
But did you know that there are some scientific considerations you need to take into account too?
For example, if your lawn is incredibly shady and you have vast trees overhead which minimise your grass’s exposure to sunlight, it is best to keep your grass a bit longer to create a larger surface area on which photosynthesis can take place.
Similarly, grass should be left longer during very dry periods in order to prevent the grass blades from burning in the sun – though this doesn’t mean simply leaving your lawn untended.
If you want to or need to keep the grass long, you can simply set the cutting height at one of the highest settings to tidy up the lawn without taking too much height. Think of it as a hair trim but for your grass!
One final tip – never remove more than 1/3 of the blade’s full length when mowing. If you do, you risk removing and cutting away too many of the nutrients that the grass needs to grow and thrive, leaving it more susceptible to disease and long-term damage.
Make lawn mowing work for you
Tons of benefits come with a robot mower investment – not just the time-saving element of your mower’s ‘set it and forget it’ construction, but also the versatility that comes with each automated mower on the market.
