Case Study: Private Domestic Client

The Brief:

When a recent client reached out to us to discuss the complexity of their existing garden maintenance routine, we knew they couldn’t be alone in their challenges.

With a vast expanse of lawn which, at the time, required three different mowers to manage, the client was finding that the time it took to simply keep on top of the grass length meant that any further grounds work was near impossible within the allocated time frame. And with a desire to spend more time at home with the family, the client found that he was ready for a change to his routine.

So, he reached out to GroundTech – and we sent a team out to survey the expanse of lawn, sports pitches, and grassy woodland areas, in the hopes of pairing it with one of our automated robotic mowers.

The Project and Challenges:

Our consultation and site visit immediately introduced a few challenges; namely the narrow transfer between the different areas of grassland and landscapes, the freshly seeded areas which needed a soft touch in terms of management, and the network of patios and paths which ran throughout the grounds and separated different spaces from each other.

Finally, as the client was concerned about safety and the security of a robotic mower, we had to consider the placement of the charging station and the timing of operations to avoid drawing attention from passers by.

The Results

In order to ensure that a robotic mower could access all the key areas of turf and grassland, we started by laying the relevant cables under the patios and pathways to allow the mower to move seamlessly between different ground zones – and adapt the cutting length and program accordingly.

Our technical team helped the client to understand the difference in programming between the different zones, to ensure that each was maintained according to the client’s preference, and we installed a single charging station which was hidden behind an outbuilding for ease of access and optimum security. Finally, we set the mower to operate overnight to minimise exposure to passersby, and ensured that any newly seeded areas were avoided through boundary planning and programming.

Just two weeks after installation, the client got in touch with us to not only herald the results of the mower, but to let us in on a little secret – that he was mesmerised by his new robot! A resounding success, which saw us truly put the features and functions of the robotic mower to the test.
