Initial consultation:
Whalebone Golf Club is the ultimate golf experience in the of heart of Essex and offers an 18-hole course which stretches over 4293 yards of beautifully maintained fairways and greens. With the Range, Moby Golf and Foot Golf there is something for all the family to enjoy.
Understanding the requirements:
Ed Blacker, one of the directors at Whalebone Golf Club approached GroundTech in order to save the greenkeepers time in the daily activities on the Driving Range and to also resolve the issue with the previous mower which struggled to get up the banks in wet conditions.
One of the biggest attractions of the robotic systems to Ed was the consistency with which they can maintain the outfield, both on the driving range and out on the course itself. The driving range was presenting a few challenges particularly due to amount of time it was taking from the greenkeeping team's daily activities. With the previous system, the entire range had to be cleared before the grass could be cut. With this new system, ball picking and grass cutting can happen at the same time, making the whole process much more efficient. After much research into the market to understand who the leading operators were, Ed found that Marcus and his team were the best option. The package provided by GroundTech includes:
- 1x Drop Pit Wash Return System
- 1x Echo RP1250
- 1x TM1050 with Deflection Kit
- 1x 4g Base Station
- 1x Maintenance Package to include:
- 24 Hours Monitoring and Support
- Remote Maintenance and Reprogramming
- Annual Service for the Mower
- 2x Services Per Anum for the Ball Picker
- On Site Repairs
From the Client
"Marcus and the team have done an amazing job with the installation itself. The team have been effective, efficient, very friendly and completed a quick installation. I think having new equipment on site has been such a big benefit to the site. We have never run out of golf balls. The place looks a lot tidier, more effective, more efficient. Everything is running very smoothly, I believe every club should have automated driving ranges.”

Trial and Implementation of Robotic Mowers
After a successful on-site demonstration provided by GroundTech earlier in the year, Whalebone Golf Club took the next steps in modernising their course maintenance by introducing a full Drop Pit Wash Return System, Mower, Ball Picker and Maintenance Package. The GPS controlled system has allowed the team to add no go zones in the winter to resolve the issues with the mower getting stuck up the banks in wet conditions. The GPS system also allows the team to map in high density zones on the driving range to control the ball picking in certain areas of high concentration balls.
From the Client
“Here at Whalebone Golf Club, we're particularly keen to present our course as consistent as we can year round so that users get a similar and consistent experience of playing the course and having gone down that route and sort of installed them now, we're really pleased with the outcome to Marcus and his team providing effectively a sort of one-stop shop for us in terms of dealing with the whole delivery process from installing the robots to making sure that ultimately that led to balls being successfully transferred into our hopper each day and they managed the installation process. They managed all of that and they did an excellent job. ”
