Initial consultation:
Brentwood Golf Club is home to a 18 hole, Par 72 course which offers golfers of all levels a challenging experience. The course includes a number of water features, mature woodlands and undulating fairways and has undergone significant improvements over the years.
Starting with the Right Foundations
Every successful autonomous installation starts long before the mower cuts its first blade of grass. GroundTech began by surveying the course and testing several locations for the 4G RTK base station, ensuring the strongest and most reliable signal possible. With the optimal location confirmed, the charging station was installed in a position that provided easy access to both mains power and the areas the mower would be maintaining. Rather than attempting to automate every rough area from day one, GroundTech worked alongside the greenkeeping team to identify a small number of suitable areas to map initially. This gradual approach allowed the team to become familiar with the technology while seeing exactly how it would fit into their day-to day maintenance programme.
How Groundtech & Echo Robotics TM-2050 Won Over the Greenkeeping Team
When it comes to autonomous mowing, not every golf course is ready to jump in with both feet. For this golf club, the decision to invest in an Echo Robotics TM-2050 wasn't taken lightly. In fact, the Head Greenkeeper admits he was one of the biggest doubters.
“I’ll be honest, I was very sceptical about autonomous mowing. I’d heard and seen several horror stories from other golf courses using different products and different companies, so I wasn’t convinced it was something we wanted on our course. But after just two weeks
of watching the TM-2050 at work, it’s completely changed my mind. I’m genuinely very impressed with the mower. It’s reliable, the quality of cut is excellent and it’s exceeded my expectations.”
That change in opinion didn’t happen by chance. It came from careful planning, a phased installation and ongoing support from the GroundTech team.
Training That Builds Confidence
Introducing new technology is about more than simply installing a machine. GroundTech spent time with the greenkeeping team, providing practical, hands-on training covering the Echo Robotics app, day-to-day operation, monitoring the mower, editing maps and even creating new mowing areas themselves. By giving the team the confidence to manage the system independently, they quickly began to see the flexibility and control that autonomous mowing could offer.
More Time for What Really Matters
Now, several months after installation, the benefits are being felt every day. With the TM-2050 taking care of routine rough mowing, the greenkeeping team has been able to redirect valuable hours towards the skilled tasks that have the greatest impact on course presentation and playing quality. The results have been so positive that discussions are already underway about introducing a second Echo Robotics TM-2050 to maintain the remaining rough areas across the course. What began as an experiment has quickly become an investment the team wants to expand.
Support Beyond Installation
For the Head Greenkeeper, one of the biggest factors behind the success of the project has been the support provided by GroundTech.
“The customer service from GroundTech has been brilliant. We have a WhatsApp group where we can ask questions at any time, and if we ever get stuck, the GroundTech guys are always on hand to help. That level of support has given us real confidence in using the system.” From installation and training through to ongoing technical support, GroundTech has remained closely involved, ensuring the team always has someone to turn to whenever they need assistance.
